Brains and Alan fly out to New Geneva to pay a visit to QuaRC - the Quantum Research Centre - home of the Supreme Hadron Collider, which is the creation of Brains’ former Cambridge lab partner, Professor Moffat. The professor lets Alan activate the SHC, but the young lad is disappointed that nothing seems to happen – the reaction only taking place at an atomic level. Meanwhile, up in Thunderbird 5, John is alerted to a Magnitude 3 meteorite that has suddenly changed course and is now heading for the outskirts of New Geneva. As Virgil takes Thunderbird 2 to check the impact zone, John learns that both the GDF satellite and a plane flying above the collider are now being pulled towards QuaRC – the collider has caused a powerful gravity well that is drawing everything towards it. Scott is able to grapple the jet using Thunderbird 1, but he gets caught in the gravity well and both aircraft are pulled towards the collider. Luckily Alan recalls the slingshot manoeuvre he once made in Thunderbird 3, and is able to direct Scott and the plane to safety. Inside QuaRC, Professor Moffat tries to shut down the gravitron generator – but the system has become self-sustaining, and is now out of control. Unless the professor and Brains can find a way to shut down the collider, the GDF satellite will destroy the facility; their only hope lies in the one craft International Rescue has that can cope with high pressure: the submarine, Thunderbird 4
