Mulder and Scully each receive a secure message from an unknown party, assigning them to investigate a shooting at a shopping mall in the Prince George’s County, Maryland. It initially looks like a simple case of a bad break-up between two dating employees at a fast food bar ending in a killing spree, which was only halted when police shot down the gunman; but then Mulder observes that the shooter wasn’t aiming at the fleeing crowd of shoppers, and that his ex-girlfriend isn’t amongst the casualties. As Mulder and Scully look for the missing woman, one of the bystanders, a mother with a baby, grabs a police officer’s gun and starts babbling about holes in the sky – just like the gunman; seen as a threat, the woman is shot down by police. Then Mulder locates the missing girlfriend up on the roof: she has a gun trained on some hostages, and is also obsessing about lights and holes in the sky…
