Clarksboro, Mississippi, 1987: Mr. X deals with the horrific side-effects of a new drug tested on schoolchildren. Disillusioned by the plans of his boss, the Cigarette Smoking Man, Mr. X decides to inform the press, but he is stopped by one of his more manipulative colleagues…

The Present: at FBI Headquarters, Washington D.C, Mulder and Scully forego their reinstatement training schedule to follow up on a message left for Mulder by the current resident of his former apartment in Alexandria, Virginia. It seems that someone expertly broke into the home of Kelly Anne Steubens, but instead of stealing anything from her girlfriend and son, they left a phial of red liquid and an ‘X’ taped to the window. Scully analyses the liquid and identifies it as a version of Purity – the alien virus commonly known as ‘Black Oil’. Meanwhile, Mulder tracks the source of a series of mysterious messages left on his voicemail – and comes face to face with an old colleague who was believed to be dead…
