On the primitive planet of Mintaka III, a team of Federation anthropologists are studying the inhabitants of a small village from inside a camouflaged observation outpost. But when the station is rocked by an explosion, Baron, the expedition leader, and his assistant, Warren, are both seriously injured, while their colleague, Palmer, wanders off in a daze towards the nearby settlement. The U.S.S. Enterprise is despatched to assist the scientific team and locate Palmer; however, when the away team beams back to the ship with Warren, they are seen by two Mintakans, Liko and his son, Oji; shocked at seeing people vanish before his eyes, Liko accidentally slips and falls, critically injuring himself. Doctor Crusher has no choice but to beam Liko up to the Enterprise, despite contravening the Federation Prime Directive of non-interference; after she saves the man’s life, the doctor then performs a procedure to remove his short term memory. But when Liko returns to the planet his memory adjustment fails; having overheard a conversation in sickbay, he then proceeds to inform the villagers of ‘The Picard’, a god, capable of healing wounds and reversing death...
